Got Questions? Ask Away!
We’re here to make music education accessible, engaging, and tailored to your needs. Whether you’re curious about our programs, instruments, or how to get started, we’re happy to help.
We offer lessons and classes for a wide range of instruments, including piano, percussion, strings, guitar, and wind/brass instruments. (Not Just) Rock Band, weekday group classes, and Saturday programs provide opportunities for students to collaborate, improvise, and perform.
YMA operates at multiple locations, including churches in Alamance County and Greater Greensboro, such as Whitsett, NC. Exact locations and schedules are provided during registration or upon inquiry.
YMA uses a research-based teaching approach rooted in Music Learning Theory (MLT). This method emphasizes audiation—the ability to hear and understand music in the mind—along with movement, improvisation, and pattern recognition to build strong musical foundations.
Students develop skills in playing by ear, improvisation, composition, audiation, and reading music. Our goal is to create independent, confident musicians who can explore any genre they choose.
Our programs are open to students in grades 1 through 12 for weekday and Saturday classes, and to learners of all ages for private lessons and (Not Just) Rock Band.
No prior experience is necessary to participate in YMA programs. Our lessons and classes are designed to meet students at their level, whether they’re complete beginners or advanced musicians.
Yes, we provide instruments for students who need them, with the exception of pianos/keyboards and full percussion sets (practice sets for percussion are provided). However, we can help connect families with the right resources to rent or purchase these instruments when needed.
Whether private or group, lessons focus on developing skills in tonal and rhythmic audiation, motor coordination, improvisation, and repertoire performance. Beginners spend time away from their instrument at first, focusing on aural development, singing, and movement to build a strong musical foundation. Classes are interactive and hands-on, incorporating these skills with instrument-playing as students progress.
Saturday students choose between the String Orchestra or Group Piano tracks. All students also participate in general music and modern band sessions, where they learn to collaborate and create music with peers. A packed lunch to go is included to make the day more seamless and enjoyable.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to be as involved as possible to be able to support their student's learning at home.
Our programs are adaptable and inclusive, offering private lessons or small group settings to suit individual comfort levels. We work to create a supportive, welcoming environment for every student.
Yes! We currently offer bilingual music education opportunities in English and Spanish for piano, violin, and viola.
We understand that high-quality music education can feel out of reach, but we’re committed to making it accessible to everyone. While our fees reflect the expert teaching, resources, and time it takes to provide an excellent program, we offer financial aid and scholarships on a sliding scale to ensure cost is never a barrier. Everyone deserves the joy of learning and creating music!
Financial aid is offered on a sliding scale based on each family’s unique circumstances. Students who demonstrate need may receive significant tuition assistance. In special cases, we work closely with families to find the best solution.
Financial aid is available to students of all ages and backgrounds. We assess eligibility based on financial need and commitment to the program for returning students.
To apply for financial aid, you’ll need to fill out our financial aid application form, available on our website or at registration. Supporting documents may be required to help us determine your eligibility.
Yes, students receiving financial aid are expected to attend lessons and classes regularly, come prepared, and actively engage. While these are expectations for all participants, financial aid recipients are held to specific standards to ensure resources support those fully committed to their music education. This approach helps maximize the impact of our programs.
Financial aid applies to all of our programs, including private lessons, group classes, and (Not Just) Rock Band.
Yes, instrument loans are provided at no cost to participants.
Yes, returning students can reapply for financial aid each year. Priority is often given to returning students who have demonstrated dedication and commitment to their music education. Returning students may also be eligible for merit scholarships to receive additional financial assistance.
Financial aid may help with some extracurricular activities, such as workshops or performances, but this depends on the specific event and available funding.
We aim to accommodate as many students as possible, but the total number of financial aid recipients depends on our funding and resources for the year.
